Residents of Crawford Run Road in East Deer and drivers who use the road regularly are in for a long summer.

Part of the heavily traveled road is scheduled to close Monday and could stay closed for the next five months, according to the Allegheny County Department of Public Works.

The 400 block of the road will close starting at 9 a.m. as part of a construction project on Crawford Run Road Bridge No. 3.

Crawford Run Road Bridge No. 3 is not a traditional bridge, but rather a culvert.

In bridges, structures with shorter spans — usually under 20 feet — built primarily to allow water to pass underneath a roadway are classified as culverts.

An average of more than 2,730 drivers use Crawford Run Road each day, according to the county.

The culvert replacement project will be done by Pugliano Construction of Plum.

Brent Wasko, spokesman for Allegheny County Public Works, said the current structure has started to crumble along one of its sides, raising concerns that it would eventually endanger the northbound lane.

In 2023, crews from Pugliano Construction worked on concrete repairs to an outlet, shoulder stabilization, asphalt restoration and guardrail replacement on the same bridge as part of a $2.6 million contract that included work on six other bridges.

The new project is expected to cost a little more than $335,900 and will be cast out of concrete.

“It’ll just be an improvement in design over the previous one,” Wasko said.

During the closure over the next few months, traffic will be detoured using Freeport Road, Baileys Run Road and Russellton Airport Road.

Residents who live near the closure area will have access to their homes at all times, the county said.
