Ashlynn Snyder hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the seventh to lead No. 5 Jefferson-Morgan to a 5-4 victory over No. 3 West Greene in the Class A softball third-place game Wednesday, claiming the WPIAL’s final berth in the PIAA bracket.
Gabby Marmie and Kallyn Novak each had a single and an RBI for the Rockets (17-7). Josie Mason had two hits and an RBI for the Pioneers (13-9). State tournament play begins Monday.
Baseball
Avonworth 9, Riverside 2 – Carson Franc doubled and drove in two runs and Cooper Scharding had a single, triple and RBI to lead No. 1 Avonworth (18-6) past No. 7 Riverside (12-9) in the Class 3A third-place game. Jack Dolan singled and drove in a pair of runs for the Antelopes. Dylan Meyer homered and Logan Young singled and doubled for the Panthers. Both teams have qualified for states.
Montour 9, Thomas Jefferson 3 – Tyler Puffer went 3 for 4 with two doubles and a home run to help No. 8 Montour (18-6) past No. 3 Thomas Jefferson (18-6) in the Class 5A third-place game. Matteo Weber doubled, tripled and drove in two runs and Caleb Armbruster went 3 for 3 with three RBIs for the Spartans. Calvin Caterino went 1 for 3 with two RBIs for the Jaguars. Both teams have qualified for the state tournament.
