Police say someone shot at officers, ATF agents during Upper Hill probe
Pittsburgh police said they were shot at during an investigation overnight in the Upper Hill neighborhood.
Someone was detained for questioning during the incident in the 900 block of Clarissa Street, police said. No one was hurt.
Police Chief Jason Lando told TribLive news partner WTAE that detectives were working with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives at the time. An ATF agent’s car was struck by gunfire.
Police were searching for a wanted person when the shots were fired. It was unclear if that person was behind the gunfire.
Pittsburgh Uber driver accused of sexually assaulting passenger
A Pittsburgh man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman after he drove her home in an Uber, according to court papers obtained by TribLive news partner WTAE.
Mustafa Al Ghurairi, 33, is behind bars without bail on charges of rape, aggravated indecent assault and related offenses. He is accused by Pittsburgh police of entering the woman’s home in Oakland on March 21.
The accuser told investigators the driver sent her a text message the next day.
Uber issued a statement to WTAE that said: “We are sickened by the appalling details of this report. The driver was banned from the Uber platform as soon as we were made aware, and we have been in touch with the police.”
Al Ghurairi did not have an attorney listed in online court records. A June 8 preliminary hearing is scheduled.
Police say Clairton VFD treasurer stole $37K from department
A Clairton man is facing theft charges after police said he stole almost $37,000 from the Clairton Volunteer Fire Department.
Joseph Massaro, 46, was serving as treasurer of the fire department at the time, according to court papers obtained by TribLive news partner WTAE.
Allegheny County detectives said Massaro used the money for personal purchases, including Amazon orders and payments to Home Depot and Capital One.
In court papers, Massaro claimed some of the transactions were mistakes, due to a mix-up in accounts. He is charged with theft, receiving stolen property and misapplication of entrusted property. He is free on nonmonetary bail.
An attorney was not listed in court records. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 16.
JCPenny at Ross Park Mall set to close
The JCPenney store at Ross Park Mall is set to close Sept. 20, WTAE reported.
A spokesperson said in a statement that the store wasn’t able to continue its lease terms for the location.
The Ross Park Mall store was sold in 2025, according to a property and sales report from Copper Property.
Pa. AG says former Fayette County man hid cameras in bathroom to record child
A former Fayette County man is facing charges after state Attorney General Dave Sunday said he was responsible for hidden cameras installed in a Brownsville home to capture images of a child.
Adam Benjamin Arena, 47, was arrested this week on about 150 charges, including invasion of privacy and child pornography. The cameras were installed primarily in a shower and bathroom area. Investigators conducted a search warrant in June 2024 and found videos and images on multiple devices owned by Arena, according to a statement from the attorney general’s office.
“This is abhorrent conduct that has no place in a civilized society,” Sunday said in the statement.
Arena did not have an attorney listed in online court records. A June 8 preliminary hearing is scheduled.
