Double up on patriotism this Fourth of July by registering for the McCandless Bday 5K Run/Walk in North Park in celebration of the town’s 175th birthday.
Events are being held throughout the year to commemorate McCandless’ founding, including the 5K, 1-mile fun run, and kids dash combo on July 4, beginning at 9 a..m. at the North Park Boathouse on Pearce Mill Road.
“A 5K race is a great way for families to do something active together. Whether someone is running competitively, walking the course, or cheering from the sidelines, the event is designed to be welcoming and enjoyable for all ages and abilities,” said Abby Lucostic, director of parks and recreation for McCandless.
Race registrants will receive a limited edition McCandless175 T-shirt. Kona Ice will be on hand after the race, along with other Fourth-inspired festivities.
“(The race) symbolizes not just a birthday, but a shared community experience rooted in our collective town pride, health and fun,” said Lucostic of McCandless. “It’s a powerful reflection of the town’s strong sense of community, particularly during this landmark 175th anniversary year.”
Local businesses are taking part in the town’s important milestone, including Appalachian Running Co. with a preparatory Start to 5K training program and YogaSix with warm-up and cool-down opportunities for race registrants in the training program.
Both businesses are located in Wexford Plaza along Perry Highway in Pine.
“We just love being a part of the community and also building our own community. We are runners, and we enjoy getting to know the (runners),” said Chrissy Dummer, an associate at Appalachian Running Co., who is helping to run the program.
Appalachian Running Co. has a few remaining spots left to take part in the final days of the prep program and are perfect for those who “can tackle short distances already.”
It’s first-come, first-served for these few openings. If interested, email Dummer at christen.dummer@gmail.com.
Appalachian Running Co. and Yoga Six will have informational tables at the race. The Allegheny County park rangers also will be there.
Registration for the 5K run/walk is $40, and the 1-mile fun run/walk is $30 until July 1, after which prices increase by $5. The Kids Dash for children 13 and younger is $15. This does not include online fees.
In addition to covering the costs of the race, organized by GCXC, the fees will help support the yearlong McCandless175 celebrations for the community, according to Lucostic.
