You can still see the large buffalo statue standing guard when entering what was once the White Buffalo Golf Course and Clubhouse on the Hill restaurant and bar in Freeport.
It’s all that remains as a reminder of the former business-turned-luxury home offering sweeping scenic views of the surrounding countryside.
The White Buffalo Golf Course and The Clubhouse on the Hill, owned by Michael and Virginia Graff of Fawn, closed in 2023.
The hilltop property listing includes 15 acres and the newly renovated home. It is listed at $1.8 million by Howard Hanna agents Kathleen DeMartino and Patricia Roberson.
A separate parcel of the former golf course (499 Freeport Road, lot 2) includes almost 40 acres of land that is suitable for a multi-home development or single-family residence and is listed at $650,000.
The former golf course, restaurant and bar had operated under the Graffs from 2018 to 2023. All of the restaurant contents were liquidated at auction after the business closed on Dec. 15, 2023.
Married couple Robert and Kimberly Barr bought the property two years ago after moving back from Texas to the Alle-Kiski Valley.
Kimberly Barr is a Freeport councilwoman, and she and Robert have done the majority of the renovations themselves.
“We wanted to create a good layout that worked with the existing structure. We gutted it and took it down to studs with new electric, new plumbing, new furnace, new roof. It’s basically a new structure,” Kimberly Barr said.
The lower basement remains a blank slate for the next owner and the Barrs kept the original clubhouse doors.
The couple has completely renovated the 4,000 square foot space into a resort-style residence, blending nature with high-end, custom finishes.
The couple resides on the backside of the golf course. Robert Barr is a Freeport native and had his eye on the golf course for many years.
“It was purchased with the purpose of remodeling, to invest in it,” Kimberly Barr said. “We live on 250 acres on the backside of the course and we built our house on top. We love our spot and when this opportunity came up, Robert said we just couldn’t pass it up.”
Renovations are almost completed and include custom walnut cabinets, hardwood floors, handcrafted doors, soaring ceilings and single-pane windows.
The four parking lots are currently being removed to make way for a traditional residential setting.
DeMartino and Roberson said the panoramic views from inside the home and from the back deck are spectacular.
Before it was a golf course, it was a farm.
“Look at this view. It’s stunning. There’s so much opportunity with this property. It’s private but so close to Route 28,” Roberson said.
The home is designed for one-level living and has four bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a seven and 1/2 garage, a chef’s kitchen with quartz countertops, a hand-laid stone fireplace and a modern soaking tub.
The property is zoned suburban residential and is in the Freeport Area School District.
“The views. It’s unparalleled to anything else in the area,” Kimberly Barr said. “It’s a really unique, special property.”
The Barrs are working to convert about 80 acres of the property back to meadows.
“I hope someone buys it that loves it as much as we do. Someone will love it, sitting on the back deck, watching the deer and turkey in the morning,” Kimberly Barr said.
