Penn-Trafford baseball coach Lou Cortazzo was at Penn State for business on May 27.
He would have rather been at EQT Park in Washington playing for the WPIAL Class 5A title.
The Warriors saw their season come up short May 19 in the quarterfinals, falling 11-10 to finalist South Fayette.
Now Cortazzo faces a season of rebuilding.
The Warriors, who finished 16-6, return only four starters: sophomore third baseman Tanner DeStefano, junior pitcher Aiden Drotos, junior left fielder Austin Kovarik and junior utility player Jordan White.
DeStefano, Drotos, senior outfielder Nico Casciato and senior catcher Colton Tyburski were first-team Section 1-5A all-stars, while senior pitcher Dom Delio, senior center fielder Logan Matrisch and White were named second-team all-stars.
“They were all deserving all-stars,” Cortazzo said. “Senior shortstop Zach Feldman should have been on the squad.
“It was a disappointing ending. Aiden was not sharp and his velo was down. We also made some mistakes that cost us.”
The Warriors, who trailed 10-6 after five innings, rallied to tie the score in the sixth.
Tyburski delivered a key three-run triple to highlight the inning. Bryce Ruby tied the game with hit.
Matrisch homered for the Warriors.
“(South Fayette) is a good hitting team, and we made mistakes that aided them,” Cortazzo said. “We battled back after that home run and showed our resiliency.”
Most of the seniors will be playing baseball or football in college.
Tyburski and Matrisch will attend Seton Hill, Delio plans to play at Pitt-Johnstown, Casciato is headed to Grove City, Ruby will attend John Carroll, and Evan Lawson and A.J. Morrow will go to Westmoreland County Community College. Feldman will attend Pitt.
“We are going to be young,” Cortazzo said. “We have a couple freshmen that will be batting for starting spots.”
Other returnees expected to compete for starting spots are sophomore pitcher Drew Hauck, junior infielder Evan Gigliotti and junior pitcher Connor Korinko.
“I have to replace three infielders, a catcher and two outfielders,” Cortazzo said. “We will see how we do in fall ball.”
