Tom Moul wasn’t entirely ready to discuss what’s next. After 14 years leading the Fox Chapel cross-country programs and 19 years at the helm of the track programs, he chose to retire following this outdoor season.
Moul still needed time to reflect on the past and how he would find ways to fill his time moving forward.
The Foxes’ 3,200-meter relay team gave him a race to remember for his last meet in charge. Fox Chapel entered the PIAA Class 3A championships seeded 19th in the event.
Running with one replacement runner — Marin Airik filled in for Sydney Kimmons, who was out due to an injury — the Foxes placed eighth with a time of 9:26.80 and got on the medal stand.
Claire Loludice, Ella Shevchuk and Bridget Hemingray also were part of the team that ended up on the podium.
“They did something similar in indoor,” Moul said. “There were three heats. They were in the second heat, and they knew they had to win it. The race they ran in the second heat was an epic heat. I was proud of them.”
In what was a miserable weather weekend all across Pennsylvania, Fox Chapel had to fend off the rain during the race.
Moul believed the athletes, who had experience at states across multiple sports and seasons, were prepared.
“It was a matter of having the mental and physical toughness to do it,” Moul said. “We talked about it the night before. Even though they are so young, they had a lot of big races. They kind of talked it out amongst themselves. They had a lot of confidence they could win their heat.”
Claire Conti also competed at states for the fourth consecutive year.
Conti, who was a WPIAL champion in the discus as a junior, closed her career by placing 14th at states. Conti had a throw of 107-11.
Moul said he was proud of Conti and is excited to see what she can do at Allegheny College.
“She’s done a lot for the program,” Moul said. “Of course, she wanted to get the medal this year, but it wasn’t in the cards. I’ve enjoyed working with her. She is a great person and a great worker.”
One of Moul’s assistants, Justin Patterson, will take over the program next season. Moul was happy with how Fox Chapel finished this spring.
“Overall, I’m happy with how we did,” Moul said. “We had six medals at WPIALs, which was a good showing. The kids went out and performed well at big meets. They’ll be able to build on that next year.”
