As Greensburg Central Catholic baseball coach John Boyle was handing out silver medals to his players for finishing second in the WPIAL, he told every one of them, “We are not done yet.”

The Centurions (17-1) saw their perfect season end with a 5-1 loss to Eden Christian in the Class A championship game Tuesday at EQT Park.

“I feel we are good enough to win the PIAA title,” Boyle said. “That is the bigger prize. The players believe that.”

The Centurions open the playoffs at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Claysburg-Kimmel, the District 6 champion.

Claysburg-Kimmel rolled through the Heritage Conference in the District 6 playoffs, defeating Purchase Line, 12-2; Northern Cambria, 3-1; and Homer-Center, 10-0.

Boyle said he does not know much about the Centurions’ opponent yet. But he figures they are talented after reaching the PIAA playoffs.

Claysburg-Kimmel (16-7) tied for first place with Mount Union in the Inter County-East Conference.

Sophomore pitcher Gavin Teon leads Claysburg-Kimmel. He is batting .488 with three home runs, 15 stolen bases, 36 runs scored and 39 RBIs. On the mound, he is 4-2 with a 2.20 earned run average.

Senior catcher Mason Campagna has a .550 average, six home runs, 33 runs scored and 29 RBIs. Senior third baseman Paydden Knisley has 24 RBIs. Junior pitcher Drew Slowik is 6-2 with a 2.55 earned run average. Campagna is a Penn State recruit who played on the same team as GCC’s senior catcher Anthony Grippo, also a Nittany Lions recruit.

“Mason is very talented,” Grippo said. “We have been playing together since we were 12.”

GCC is 1-5 in the WPIAL finals but is 1-0 when reaching the PIAA finals. Its only title came in 2002 when it defeated Schuylkill Haven, 4-2. The Centurions are 10-7 overall in the PIAA playoffs. They defeated West Middlesex, 12-9, and fell to Clarion, 15-5, in the 2025 playoffs.

This is only Claysburg-Kimmel’s second appearance in the PIAA playoffs. The only other time came in 2007, a 12-1 loss to Cameron County.

“I told someone that even though we had a perfect record, we were far from perfect,” Boyle said. “We were back at practice after the Eden Christian game working on things to get better.

“I believe in this team. We can win the PIAA title. We just need to play our game. We have the pitching.”

GCC senior Tyler Samide is 7-1 and senior Alec Martin is 6-0.

Grippo, Samide and freshman third baseman Carson Kramer are the Centurions’ top hitters.

Grippo had two hits, including an RBI double, against Eden Christian. He is batting .590 with 28 RBIs.

Samide has 39 RBIs, Carson Kramer has 30 RBIs, and Nolan Sapko has 12 stolen bases.
