North and southbound Interstate 79 will each be closed for three separate nights in June for construction of the new Wexford interchange in Marshall and Franklin Park, PennDOT announced.
The closures, along with lane restrictions, are needed for the delivery and placement of bridge beams.
While dates for the closures and restrictions are not yet known, PennDOT said they will occur between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. on various weeknights:
• Southbound I-79 will be reduced to a single lane between Mingo Road and the onramp to southbound I-79 from Route 910/Wexford Bayne Road on three separate nights.
Single-lane restrictions are expected on northbound I-79 between the off and onramps at the Route 910/Wexford interchange.
• Southbound I-79 will be closed and detoured on three separate nights.
Northbound I-79 will be reduced to a single lane of traffic between the off and onramps at the Route 910/Wexford interchange.
• Northbound I-79 will be closed and detoured on three separate nights.
Southbound I-79 will have single lane restrictions.
Local and state police will control traffic at signalized intersections during the closures and detours, PennDOT said.
The posted detours, both southbound and northbound, will make use of the Route 910/Wexford exit.
What the project will accomplish
The $46.5 million, two-year project started in 2025 is reconfiguring the interchange on the border of Franklin Park and Marshall into what PennDOT calls a “single point urban interchange.”
It will see the northbound off-ramp from I-79 to Route 910, the northbound on-ramp from Route 910 to I-79, and the signalized intersection for them on the eastern side of the highway removed.
Replacing those ramps will be two new bridges over the interstate — one south of Route 910 for northbound traffic getting off of I-79 and one north of Route 910 for those getting on and traveling north.
When complete, everything will connect at one intersection on the western side of the Route 910 bridge.
Work is expected to continue through the 2027 construction season.
