The former Pittsburgh Renaissance Hotel is undergoing its own rebirth.

The hotel occupying the 1906-built, 13-story Fulton Building has rebranded as The Atterbury Hotel.

The hotel’s website has been updated to reflect the new name and a wall and ground signage replacement request was unanimously approved during a Tuesday meeting of the Pittsburgh Planning Commission — with additional approval from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust regarding aesthetic compatibility with its neighbor, the Byham Theater. There was no public opposition.

The building, located at 107 Sixth St., was designed by architect Grosvenor Atterbury in Renaissance Revival style. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

The Fulton Building represents a dwindling Pittsburgh legacy for an architect who, elsewhere, designed the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Yale University Medical Library and redecorated major rooms in New York City Hall, among numerous other projects.

The Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, which featured Fulton’s work in late April, states the Michigan native’s buildings “reflected asymmetrical Shingle Style influences and often found inspiration in the picturesque buildings of Britain and Central and Southern Europe.”

Funded by industrialist Henry Phipps, the building overlooking the Allegheny River was named after Robert Fulton, inventor of the commercial steamboat and the first metal submarine.

Three other buildings designed by Atterbury once stood alongside the Fulton, erected within a four-year span.

Those projects included The Bessemer Building, built in 1904 and demolished in 1964. The 17-story Manufacturer’s Building was completed in 1907 and demolished in 1956. Parking infrastructure now occupies both sites. The four-story Phipps Natatorium, a bathhouse and swimming pool located behind the Manufacturer’s Building, was completed in 1908. It was demolished in 1935.

The Fulton is Atterbury’s last remaining Downtown work. After a major renovation, it began playing host to the Pittsburgh Renaissance Hotel (byMarriott) in 2001. It has been owned by Maryland-based RLJ Lodging since 2011.

Digital rebrand copy for the Atterbury features the tagline “An icon reimagined.”
