Allegheny Health Network announced Thursday that it’s building a more than $200 million hospital in Cecil to replace its aging Canonsburg hospital, a major investment in a fast-growing area of Washington County.
In the coming months, AHN will finalize its design for a 150,000-square-foot facility at the intersection of Town Center Way and Mylan Boulevard in Southpointe II business park.
Construction is expected to start in early 2027 with an anticipated opening in the first quarter of 2029.
The hospital will provide primary, emergency, surgical and critical care. The campus will also include a building with doctors’ offices and outpatient clinics.
“We actually think we’re going to be a lot busier at this site by way of its location and physician engagement and it being a new hospital,” AHN President Mark Sevco told TribLive.
The 14-hospital system, a division of Pittsburgh-based Highmark, previously signaled plans to replace AHN Canonsburg, but was debating between using the existing site or buying a new one. AHN purchased the property in Cecil just hours before its announcement.
“We were always committed to the replacement hospital for AHN Canonsburg,” Sevco said. “We really wanted to make sure we picked the site that would give us the opportunity to have success for the community.”
The 104-bed Canonsburg hospital has operated at its current location in North Strabane since 1983.
All of the roughly 400 employees there will be carried over to Cecil, and hundreds more will be hired in addition.
AHN hasn’t built a hospital from the ground up since opening its Wexford campus in 2021.
