The Shaler boys volleyball team has been on a golden roll in the WPIAL playoffs these past four years.
The Titans won back-to-back Class 3A district championships in 2023 and 2024, then upon dropping to 2A, won two straight WPIAL titles in that classification.
Now, they have a chance to add a PIAA Class 2A championship to the 2024 Class 3A trophy in their collection.
The Titans (16-1) swept past City League winner Obama Academy in the first round of the state playoffs, now they head north for a noon matchup with District 10 winner Meadville (18-0).
The unbeaten Bulldogs eliminated Seton LaSalle in the first round in three games.
In another state 2A quarterfinal, WPIAL runner-up South Fayette (18-1) goes up against District 3 runner-up Brandywine Heights at Bald Eagle at 3 p.m.
In Class 3A, WPIAL winner North Allegheny (14-0) squares off against District 6 champ State College (11-4) at Indiana at noon.
Also district runner-up Butler (17-5) battles District 1 second place Neshaminy (17-6) at Bald Eagle at 1 p.m.
Mars mayhem
The district was 2-1 in three of the four state lacrosse brackets in the first round and 1-2 in the other.
Not bad for a district that doesn’t have a strong pedigree in boys and girls lacrosse, outside of Mars that is.
The Fightin’ Planets are out of this world when it comes to WPIAL lacrosse with 10 consecutive district 2A crowns for the boys and four in a row and five in six years for the girls.
So it’s no surprise that the Mars boys and girls are moving on to the second round in the boys and girls state playoffs.
In boys 2A, Mars (16-4) goes up against District 1 runner-up Upper Dublin (13-9) at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park in Mechanicsburg at 3 p.m.
WPIAL runner-up South Fayette (17-5) challenges District 3 champion Lampeter-Strasburg (21-2) at Chambersburg at 11:30 a.m.
In girls 2A, Mars (21-1) faces District 1 runner-up West Chester Rustin (14-9) at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park in Mechanicsburg at 1 p.m.
District 7 runner-up Quaker Valley (17-3) will take on District 3 champ Wyomissing (21-1) at Mifflin County at 3 p.m.
Moving up to girls 3A, Mt. Lebanon (18-2) battles District 1 runner-up Conestoga (20-2) at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Park in Mechanicsburg at 11 a.m.
WPIAL runner-up Pine-Richland (18-4) matches up against District 3 winner Manheim Township (15-2) at Chambersburg at 3:30 p.m.
Finally in boys 3A, WPIAL champion Shady Side Academy (14-7) will take on District 1 runner-up Radnor (18-5) at Mifflin County at 5 p.m.
