PennDOT is soliciting community feedback for two rural infrastructure projects — one of which passes through a famous battlefield — it has planned for later this year.
Beginning in September, PennDOT will resurface Fayette County’s National Pike between Fayette Springs Road and Fort Necessity, as well as Greene County’s Mapletown Road from Route 88 Intersection to the bridge over Whiteley Creek.
Both projects include new pavement markings and guide rails, as well as drainage and base repairs as needed. The upgrades will “extend the useful life of the existing pavement,” and improve its rideability and safety, PennDOT said in its online project presentation.
PennDOT expects to complete the work by June 2027.
Single-lane closures will take place in both locations during construction, and flaggers will be on-site to direct traffic.
The affected stretch of National Pike in Fayette is home to Fort Necessity Battlefield – the site of George Washington’s first major combat experience during the French and Indian War in 1754 and a popular tourist destination. It is also a key access point for the small communities of Chalkhill and Deer Lake.
Mapletown Road primarily serves the Greene County communities of Mapletown and Greensboro.
Those interested in submitting a comment about either project can access a form on PennDOT’s website through June 19.
