Southwest Airlines is expanding its service at Pittsburgh International Airport with a new seasonal route to West Palm Beach, Fla. and more flights on several of its existing routes.

Pittsburgh’s nonstop, less-than-daily flights to Palm Beach International Airport begin Feb. 11, the airport said in a release on Blue Sky News.

Additionally, Southwest is increasing nonstop service to Fort Myers, Fla., from eight flights per week to 12; boosting seasonal Miami service from less-than-daily to daily; and extending seasonal Cancún, Mexico, service from January through August rather than March through August.

Pittsburgh International’s Vice President of Air Service Development Joe Rotterdam said Southwest has been a “great partner.” It has grown to become the airport’s largest carrier in terms of passenger traffic and destinations served.

“Southwest continues to recognize the robust demand in our region and we are thankful for their continued investment,” Rotterdam said.

Southwest announced its West Palm Beach service as part of 28 total new routes nationally. The airline said that it will operate as many as 4,300 flights on high-volume days starting next February.

Meanwhile, it’s been a turbulent stretch for Pittsburgh International’s air service overall.

While the airport welcomed a new partner last month – Irish airline Aer Lingus – it lost another in Spirit Airlines, which ceased operations nationwide following financial turmoil. American Airlines also announced plans to suspend its flight from Pittsburgh to Los Angeles beginning in August amid rising fuel costs.
