More than 60 trees fell Saturday along the section of the Great Allegheny Passage maintained by the Yough River Trail Council, according to President Don Takac.

Six tornadoes swept through the region Saturday afternoon, accompanied by high winds peaking at 100 mph.

The group first went out Saturday evening after the storm to clear two reported fallen trees.

“When we found the first tree, we found 19 more after that,” Takac said.

Another crew went out Sunday morning and cleared 42 trees from Connellsville to Layton.

Fayette County officials cleared about 15 trees on the Sheepskin Trail.

The 23 miles of trail maintained by the Yough River Trail Council are now accessible to bikers following the cleanup, Takac said.

“Our section is open,” he said.
