A District 7 winner is guaranteed as for the first time in PIAA softball playoff history, two WPIAL teams will collide for state gold.
Laurel and Chartiers-Houston will play for the Class 2A championship Friday at Penn State.
When Neshannock repeated as PIAA champions last year, the Lancers became the 45th Class 2A softball champion crowned.
The first 2A softball state champion was Minersville from District 11 in 1979.
It was a decade later when Sto-Rox became the first WPIAL team to win 2A softball gold in 1989.
The list of PIAA Class 2A champions from District 7 includes Sto-Rox in 1989, Leechburg in 1992 and 1995, Carmichaels in 1998, Bishop Canevin in 1999, Frazier in 2019 and Neshannock in 2012, 2022, 2024, 2025.

Path to Penn State: Laurel defeated District 10 champion Saegertown in the first round, 6-2; WPIAL runner-up Neshannock in the quarterfinals, 6-2; District 5 winner Everett in the semifinals, 9-5. … Chartiers-Houston knocked off District 6 champion Bellwood-Antis in the first round, 2-0; District 2 winner Montrose in the quarterfinals, 13-1; District 1 champ Bristol in the semifinals, 3-2.
District postseason: Laurel eliminated Shady Side Academy in the first round, 15-0; Frazier in the quarterfinals, 4-2; then the Spartans lost to Neshannock in the semifinals, 7-5; before beating Chartiers-Houston in the WPIAL consolation game, 6-5. … Chartiers-Houston ousted Washington in the first round, 2-1; Riverside in the quarterfinals, 4-0; then the Buccaneers lost to Bentworth in the semifinals, 2-1; and lost again to Laurel in the WPIAL consolation game, 6-5.
Players to watch
Laurel: It has been all hands on deck for Laurel in the PIAA playoffs with different players stepping up in each round. In the first round win, sophomore Haley Fell smacked two doubles and a home run while senior pitcher Riley Balcom struck out eight for the win. In the quarterfinals, it was sophomore Haley Balcom going 2 for 2 with an RBI and senior Mayci Lang delivering two hits, a double and an RBI. In the state semifinals, senior Ivy Pancher was 3 for 3 with a home run, Fell had a pair of doubles and juniors Lexi Krol and Alexis Bair each had two hits and a run batted in. For the season, Riley Balcom is 12-3 with a 2.58 ERA. In 97 2/3 innings pitched, she has 22 walks and 105 strikeouts.
Chartiers-Houston: Junior pitcher Taryne Drilak has led the way for Chartiers-Houston in the circle this season. She scattered eight hits and struck out two in the state semifinal win. In the WPIAL quarterfinals against Riverside, Taryne threw a one-hit shutout in the team’s final district playoff win. Her younger sister Kiera had a big bat in the first round and quarterfinal state postseason wins, going a combined 5 for 7. Also in Round 2 of the PIAA, senior Seanna Riggle had two hits and drove home three runs. In the semifinals Monday, juniors Aubree Randolph and Zaylee Fonner each had a hit and an RBI. Randolph had a hit and an RBI in the whitewash of Bellwood-Antis in the state opening round.
Streaks: Laurel has won four games in a row since losing to Neshannock, 7-5, on May 21. The Spartans have won six of their last seven games. … Chartiers-Houston has only won three in a row since losing to Laurel in the district consolation game, 6-5, on May 26. The Buccaneers started the season with 14 consecutive victories.
Quotable: “We are really proud of our team and very excited to have finally gotten over the hump and back to the finals after falling just short the last two seasons in the state semis,” Chartiers-Houston coach Tricia Alderson said. “Making it to the finals coming through the eastern side of the bracket has been fun and challenging all at the same time, and it is really cool to make history with two WPIAL teams playing in this game.
“Laurel is a well-coached team with speed and athleticism. We need to get a good pitching performance and play well defensively.”
Factoids
• Neither Laurel nor Chartiers-Houston played in the 2026 WPIAL Class 2A title game, where Bentworth defeated Neshannock. The two did square off in the district 2A consolation game May 26. In that game, the Bucs led 2-1, when the Spartans exploded for five runs in the third inning and never lost the lead in winning, 6-5. Lexi Krol was 3 for 3 with a double for Laurel. Lauren Rush was 3 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBI for the Bucs.
• In seven appearances all-time, Laurel is 9-6 in the PIAA softball playoffs. This is the Spartans’ first trip to the state championship game. Prior to this year’s run, the program was 0-2 in state semifinal games.
• Chartiers-Houston has a long storied history in the PIAA playoffs with 25 appearance and an overall record of 40-23. This is the seventh state championship game appearance for the Buccaneers, who are 1-5 in title games. The Bucs lost in the state finals to Minersville three times, in 1987, 1999 and 2005. They also fell to Canton in 2000 and South Williamsport in 2003. Their lone win came in their most recent championship trip in 2010 when they defeated Montgomery, 4-1.
• Prior to 2018, Laurel had never qualified for the PIAA softball postseason. In their first state playoff game in 2018, the Spartans lost to Cochranton, 5-1. Laurel lost in the state semifinals to Neshannock twice, falling 13-6 in 2022, and then losing 1-0 to the Lancers two years later.
• The Buccaneers have not fared well going against their own in the state playoffs. Facing teams from the WPIAL, Chartiers-Houston is 4-6. In their first ever trip to the state playoffs 41 years ago, the Bucs defeated Blacklick Valley in the 2A first round, then lost to Western Beaver in the quarterfinals, 5-3. In the last 16 years, Chartiers-Houston has missed the PIAA postseason three times — 2014, 2021 and 2022.
