After reading the article “Diocese of Greensburg opens ‘listening sessions’ to help define church and parish life” (June 2, TribLive) I felt compelled to write this letter. I have been a Catholic all of my life. I went to church. I went to Catholic grade school and Catholic high school. My children went to Catholic grade school and Catholic high school; my grandchildren went to Catholic grade school and stopped.

In my opinion, the church makes it impossible to attend a Catholic high school, or any Catholic schools now for that matter. My grandson had his boys in Catholic grade school, but couldn’t afford it. The church has priced schools out of reach, and I haven’t seen much compassion or help for those who want a better education than a public school.

I’ve been to the Vatican and seen what priceless artifacts are hidden in the basement. I’ve seen how many millions of dollars the church paid out to pedophile priests, but when it comes to our children’s education, don’t you care?

When I went to high school, the first three years were free, and my last year it was $25. It’s now $14,000. Think about it. And how many kids do you have there?

I think the key to stronger parishes should start with the children.
