Independence Day parades in the Alle-Kiski Valley are few and far between. But Tarentum is ready to change that.
This year, Tarentum will host its first Fourth of July parade in decades to celebrate the country’s 250th birthday. The only other parades in the A-K Valley area are in Ford City and Apollo.
Carrie Fox, Tarentum Recreation Board President, said she can’t remember when the last Independence Day parade took place in the borough.
“There used to be a parade for almost every patriotic holiday in Tarentum … you know, Memorial Day, July 4th, there was always a parade,” she said.
Fox says she — along with the rest of the Recreation Board — is dedicated to bringing that tradition back.
The parade, set for 10 a.m. July 4, will be similar to Tarentum’s Christmastime parade, with community businesses and leaders marching through the streets. The route will start on Fifth Avenue and end on McIntire Way.
Attendees can expect appearances from groups including the Syria Shriners Bagpipe and Drum band; the Ohana Jeep Brigade; and a special visit from AMO, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds’ mascot.
Ohana co-founder Heather McAleer shared some insight on the group’s involvement in the parade this year.
“Ohana Jeep Brigade has been trying to be more involved in the community, to show that no one gets left behind,” said McAleer.
Many people play a part in making sure the event will be successful.
While Fox does a lot of the heavy lifting in the event planning, she said her husband, Hugh, also a member of the board, and her 84-year-old mother help out.
Along with the parade, the Recreation Board is excited the annual fireworks display, which was canceled last year due to a lack of funding, will return this year.
“A group in Brackenridge got together, and they raised money, and they did a fabulous job, so there’s going to be fireworks,” Fox said.
She emphasized the board’s desire for businesses represent the community in the parade, whether it’s with a big float or on foot with a handheld sign.
“We’re just hoping that people come out with a good spirit and that (the parade) gives them a good feeling,” she said.
