Pittsburgh International’s airfield will open to the public for the first time since its new terminal debuted as part of the airport’s annual running events.

P3R, the organization behind the Pittsburgh Marathon, is partnering with Canonsburg-based natural gas company CNX Resources to host the FlyBy 5K and 2-Mile Fun Run on Sept. 19. The events were on hiatus last year since the new terminal was still under construction.

Both courses take place on the airport’s taxiways.

Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis said in a release that the races are a testament to the airport’s commitment to community engagement. Proceeds from the event will go to the Airport Authority’s charitable foundation.

“This event is a unique opportunity for the public to connect with the airport in a way that’s fun and meaningful while getting a closer look at our new world-class terminal from the airfield,” she said.

P3R CEO Troy Schooley added that the FlyBy 5K’s venue made it “one of the most unique race experiences in the region.”

“Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a first-time participant, or simply looking for a fun family outing, this event offers something for everyone,” he said.

Registration for the 5K costs $38.49 and the fun run costs $27.49 for participants ages 13 and up. Participants ages 5 to 12 receive a discount, and children under 5 can participate for free.

Each participant gets a race shirt, a finisher’s medal, and access to post-race food and entertainment, including opportunities to touch airport equipment, including fire trucks and snow removers, according to airport spokesman Bob Kerlik.

Those interested can register on P3R’s website.
