After five years in business, Pittsburgh Sandwich Society is packing up its brick-and-mortar location inside Strange Roots’ Millvale taproom. According to social media posts, the business decided not to renew its lease, and the final day of service will be Saturday, June 27.
“We are incredibly thankful for everyone who supported us over the years — the regulars, the brewery staff, the families, the friends, and every single person who grabbed food from us!” reads a Pittsburgh Sandwich Society post made on June 1. “Strange Roots gave us a place to grow, create memories, and become part of such an awesome community, and we’ll always be grateful for that chapter.”
The closure comes weeks after the Pittsburgh Sandwich Society team opened Winston’s Grilled Eats & Frozen Treats in the former Crazy Cones space in Millvale. Styled as a retro roadside spot, the new walk-up eatery serves nostalgic char-grilled burgers, frozen custard and Sahlen’s hot dogs, considered a Buffalo, N.Y. staple.
The Pittsburgh Sandwich Society food truck and catering services will also remain in operation.
Pittsburgh Sandwich Society — known for hefty sandwiches including the “In N Aht double burger,” their spin on the famed In-N-Out burger — first launched in 2016. The truck grew a steady following of customers tracking it online. In addition to the double burger, its signature sandwiches ($15-16) include a classic grilled chicken club and a veggie burger, as well as rotating specials like chicken wings, Pittsburgh hot chicken and chopped cheese (the iconic New York City bodega sandwich made with ground beef, onions and melted cheese).
After opening a grab-and-go spot in Lawrenceville called Take Aht! in 2018, the business moved its brick-and-mortar to Strange Roots Experimental Ales’ taproom in Millvale in April 2021, taking over its permanent kitchen space. Strange Roots also has a taproom in New Kensington.
On June 14, the sandwich shop took to social media with an update that its Strange Roots Millvale location would close on Sundays for the remainder of the month “due to staffing challenges.”
Before closing, Pittsburgh Sandwich Society is offering a special farewell “adult dinner box” including a choice of sandwich, crinkle cut fries, a drink, merch and a coupon for a discounted custard cone at Winston’s ($4 before discount).
“Thank you again for supporting us through every season these last five years,” Pittsburgh Sandwich Society wrote at the beginning of the month. “We hope you’ll continue following along with us on the road and at Winston’s. This is just the next chapter.”
Messages left with the business were not returned as of press time.
