On Saturday, May 30, Point State Park was filled with the sound of footsteps, laughter and music as thousands of Pittsburghers came together for the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community.
Families, friends, community groups and pets walked side by side, choosing to participate in either a one mile or a 5K walk. Each step supported one of more than 150 local nonprofit organizations providing essential health and human services, from food assistance and housing support to behavioral health care, transportation and preventive services.
Highmark covers all administrative costs associated with the walk, ensuring that 100% of dollars raised goes directly to the nonprofit hand-selected by each participant. That approach helps maximize the impact of every contribution and reflects a broader focus on keeping care, resources, and support close to home.
“Seeing so many people come together at Point State Park truly highlights what makes this community special,” said Kenya T. Boswell, senior vice president of community affairs at Highmark Health and president of the Highmark Foundation. “The Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community is a key component of our Highmark Bright Blue Futures program and reflects how we approach health—by backing community partners who are making a real difference for individuals and families.”
The move to Point State Park brought new energy to the Pittsburgh walk, with expansive green space, river views, live entertainment, family friendly activities and opportunities for participants to engage with the nonprofit organizations they chose to support. The festive atmosphere reinforced the walk’s dual purpose: encouraging physical activity while uniting people around causes that strengthen regional health and well-being.
Since its inception in 2003, the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community series has raised more than $20 million for over 560 nonprofit organizations across Pennsylvania and Delaware.
By investing in local nonprofits and community based solutions, Highmark works to improve health outcomes at the neighborhood level, where they matter most.
