Penn Hills dodged the rain for its annual Memorial Day parade on May 25.
While the gray skies offered a somber backdrop for the occasion, the parade itself, originally established in 1947, brought smiles and applause for the veterans and participants.
Korean War Army veteran William H. Bailey Jr. served as an honorary veteran marshal. He rode in a hard-to-miss orange 390 AMC Javelin.
The event kicked off at 11:30 a.m. at the intersection of Erhardt Drive and Frankstown Road and proceeded to the Penn Hills Government Center along Duff Road.
Scores of people dressed in red, white and blue set up along the route to pay tribute. Candy tossed from floats was a big draw for the youngsters.
Numerous community groups and organizations participated — from veterans, youth sports teams and emergency responders to dance troupes, Scouts and the Penn Hills Big Red Marching Band.
The parade concluded with a ceremony at the Goverment Center.
