The highlight of the 70th annual Brentwood High School All-Sports Banquet was the presentation of the Mark Reider and Lady Spartan awards to the top senior male and female athletes for 2025-26.
Tafssira Garba-Gambari, who lettered in girls volleyball, basketball, track and field and flag football and earned two team MVP accolades this year, won the Lady Spartan Award.
Connor Dusch, who was named MVP of the golf and boys swimming teams, was the recipient of the Mark Reider Award.
Brentwood has recognized its top senior female athlete since 1976 with one of the school’s highest athletic honors. Last year, the longtime Booster Award was re-named Lady Spartan Award to better reflect the tradition, pride and spirit of Brentwood’s female student-athletes.
The Lady Spartan Award represents more than victories, statistics or athletic accomplishments. It honors determination, leadership, teamwork and the relentless drive to improve — not only herself, but everyone around her.
The Mark Reider Award has been presented since 1967 to the top senior male athlete. This award is named in honor of Reider, a Brentwood physical education teacher and coach who worked tirelessly in the best interests of the students and athletes around him.
His dedication, leadership and genuine care for young people earned him tremendous respect and admiration throughout the Brentwood community. Tragically, on Feb. 26, 1967, Reider lost his life in a car accident while returning from a college visit where he had been helping a student pursue a scholarship opportunity.
Student-athletes on the 20 teams at Brentwood were recognized at the all-sports banquet. Students must participate in two or more sports and maintain a cumulative 3.50 grade-point average to be eligible for recognition.
A total of 41 student-athletes were lauded, including 15 freshmen and 11 sophomores.
Scholar-Athlete awards were presented to seniors Emma Simmons (cheerleading, flag football) and Dusch.
Special tributes were made to senior quarterback Cedric Davis for eclipsing 4,000 career passing yards and junior swimmer Fawn Brendel, who broke her own school record six times in the 100 butterfly this year. Brendel earned the highest finish in a WPIAL girls individual swim event in at least 20 years at Brentwood.
The track and field program also presented awards to the athletes attaining the most points during the 2026 season, with Davis winning for the boys and freshman Tommie Sheets for the girls.
The Spartans’ team MVPs for 2025-26 consisted of the following:
• Baseball – Blaize Dias
• Boys basketball – Deng Mu
• Girls basketball – Garba-Gambari
