For almost a decade, Angels’ Place has been a steadfast presence at the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community. The Pittsburgh-based nonprofit — which provides resources to locate stable housing, education and support for single parents and their children — has seen firsthand how the walk strengthens both its mission and the families it serves.
Each year, the Highmark Walk brings together thousands of participants across western Pennsylvania, creating a platform for nonprofits like Angels’ Place to raise critical funds and build meaningful community connections. Because Highmark underwrites the cost of the event, 100% of the funds raised go directly to participating organizations.
For Angels’ Place, the event drives both awareness and impact. Now in its eighth year of fundraising through the walk the organization has raised nearly $5,000 just this year, with more than 160 participants stepping up in support. These efforts help sustain childcare, early childhood education and family support programs that enable parents and children to thrive from infancy through kindergarten. In 2025 alone, the organization served families from 18 neighboring communities, provided more than 16,000 meals and delivered over 41,000 hours of childcare — all while directing 84 cents of every dollar toward programs and services that directly support families.
“The Highmark Walk has been an incredible source of support for Angels’ Place,” said Mackenzie Harrison, special events and marketing director. “The funds raised directly support our programs, but just as important is the visibility and sense of community. It reminds our families — and our team — that they’re not walking this journey alone.”
Founded in 1984, Angels’ Place empowers single parents to complete their education, develop life skills and build stable, thriving futures for their families. Proceeds raised through the walk help fund essential services at its North Side and Swissvale locations, including housing support, parenting education, early childhood development and workforce readiness programs.
Through its childcare program, Angels’ Place provides nutritious meals, diapers and essentials, along with a comprehensive curriculum focused on literacy, math, social studies, creative arts and STEAM learning. This support is especially critical as many families with young children face barriers to accessing affordable childcare.
Year after year, staff, supporters and families lace up their sneakers to walk alongside fellow nonprofits, businesses and neighbors —united by a shared commitment to strengthening the health of communities across the region.
“The walk brings people together around a common belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to live a healthier life,” Harrison added. “We’re proud to be part of an event so closely aligned with our mission and one that allows us to invest even more deeply in the families we serve.”
As Angels’ Place looks ahead, its commitment to raising funds through the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community remains strong. With each step, the organization continues to build a brighter, healthier future — one family, one child and one community at a time.
