The Pittsburgh Penguins acquired the signing rights to pending restricted free agent forward David Gustafsson from the Winnipeg Jets on Monday in exchange for defenseman Jack St. Ivany.

Following the transaction, the Penguins formally extended a qualifying offer to Gustafsson to retain his rights.

Gustafsson, 26, spent the 2025-26 season with the Jets’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Manitoba Moose after clearing waivers Oct. 10. In 48 games, he had 32 points (10 goals, 22 assists) while primarily being deployed as a center.

A native of Tingsryd, Sweden, Gustafsson was a second-round draft pick (No. 60 overall) of the Jets in 2018 and has spent his entire professional career on this continent with that franchise.

Gustafsson (6-foot-2, 196 pounds) has spent parts of six seasons at the NHL level, most recently during the 2024-25 season.

A left-handed shot, Gustafsson is in the final days of a two-year contract with a salary cap hit of $835,000. He is eligible for salary arbitration this summer according to Puckpedia.

St. Ivany, 26, has spent his entire five-year professional career as a member of the Penguins to this point after joining the club as an unrestricted free agent signing in 2022.

Injuries largely derailed his 2025-26 campaign as he split time between the NHL club and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.

In eight NHL contests, the right-handed St. Ivany (6-foot-4, 197 pounds) appeared in 20 games and recorded seven assists while averaging 16 minutes, 20 seconds of ice time.

With Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, St. Ivany skated in eight games and posted six points (one goal, five assists).

A native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., St. Ivany is entering the final year of a three-year contract with a salary cap hit of $850,000.
