North Allegheny won another Class 6A Trib Sports Cup this season with a district-high 940 points.
Second in overall points is the school that has now captured three straight Class 3A Trib Sports Cups — Quaker Valley.
The Quakers enjoyed another strong spring sports season to pull away in capturing the school’s sixth cup title in the last seven years.
“Each group is different so it is always rewarding for our student-athletes to share with each other across all sports,” Quaker Valley athletic director and boys basketball coach Mike Mastroianni said. “We have jumped classifications through the years as well, and it’s a tribute to our athletes to sustain for that long of a period.”
Quaker Valley scored 830 points, the second most outside of North Allegheny in any classification to win the school’s 10th Sports Cup, the fourth most behind North Allegheny, Sewickley Academy and Greensburg Central Catholic.
“Our student-athletes’ continued dedication and work ethic to their sport is at the top of the list, but our coaching staffs and support staff deserve recognition for providing positive environments for our teams to succeed,” Mastroianni said. “It’s great to share with all involved, and everyone should be commended for their part. The senior class of athletes has been part of three consecutive Sports Cups and has had a tremendous impact on QV athletics.”
The Trib Cup is a yearlong competition in 26 team sports to determine the top WPIAL sports program in each classification. Schools earn points for section or conference championships, WPIAL playoff berths and district postseason success, state playoff berths and PIAA championships.
This is the second three-peat of Trib Sports Cups for the Quakers, after winning four Sports Cups in Class 4A in a five-year span between the 2017-18 and 2021-22 school years. That included three in a row between 2020 and 2022. The Quakers also captured three cups in four years in Class 2A between the 2011-12 and 2014-15 school years.
QV began its title defense with a strong start to this past school year in the fall season with district championships in girls tennis and boys cross country.
The Quakers’ ice hockey team captured Class A gold in the PIHL Penguins Cup and Pennsylvania Cup championships this winter.
The Quakers then completed the school year with WPIAL gold in boys tennis as well as district and state gold in boys track and field.
“All of these programs have sustained success for many years, and sometimes that gets taken for granted,” Mastroianni said. “Our girls and boys tennis teams under veteran coach Christie Hays won fall and spring championships. Coach Ryan Kelly, our cross country head coach, has had such an impact on cross country and track starting at the middle school level and up into the high school.
“Coach Kevin Quinn has coached and managed our outstanding hockey program for 30 years with tremendous success, and coach Jared Jones, our head track coach, elevated a program that has sustained success for close to 50 years and led our teams to unprecedented levels with back-to-back state championships.”
Quaker Valley produced points in 18 different sports, tied with Shady Side Academy for the most in Class 3A. The Quakers’ 830 points are 95 points higher than their winning point total from a year ago.
“We continue to discuss with our coaches that the other teams in our school are not our opponents, but our teammates,” Mastroianni emphasized. “In high school sports, this sometimes gets lost and is not always the case. Our coaches and staff do an outstanding job with this philosophy.”
Shady Side Academy had the third-highest point total in the entire WPIAL, but was a distant second to Quaker Valley with district titles in girls tennis, boys golf, boys lacrosse and WPIAL and PIAA crowns in girls cross country.
Rounding out the Top 5 in Class 3A were North Catholic in third place, Avonworth in fourth and South Park in fifth.
