Pittsburgh Central Catholic has produced many standout golfers over the years.
Neal Shipley and Carter Pitcairn are two of the latest to shine.
The next to shine is Daniel Donahue, a Central Catholic grad and senior at John Carroll.
Donahue played a flawless opening round, shooting a 7-under-par 65 to snag a three-shot lead in the 123rd WPGA Open Championship.
Donahue had seven birdies and no bogeys during his round Monday at Willowbrook Country Club.
“I started off hot,” Donahue told WPGA director of communications Josh Rowntree. “A bunch of putts went in early, which was good to see. It got the confidence going.
“I just continued to hit the fairways, hit the greens, and then left myself like 10-to-15-foot putts. If it went in, it went in. But, obviously, a lot of them went in, so it was nice.”
Pros J.F. Aber and Talon Kriebel shot 4-under and were tied for second place.
Kriebel recently won the Tri-State PGA Falling Rocks Classic.
Amateurs Colton Lusk, Amani D’Ambrosio, Nixon Erdely and Scott Jordan were 3-under.
Last year’s champion, Connor Schmidt, was even par after the first round.
The second round is Tuesday, and the final round Wednesday.
