Trib Total Media journalists received 12 Golden Quill awards from the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania during its 51st annual awards presentation Thursday at the Sheraton Hotel, Station Square. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review journalists Chris Togneri, Andrew Conte, Mike Wereschagin, Adam Smeltz and Carl Prine won top awards among daily newspapers and wire services with a circulation of more than 45,000. The press club honored former Trib staffer Nafari Vanaski for Best Column. Trib sister papers were honored — the Valley News Dispatch in Tarentum won three awards; and the South Hills Record and the Penn-Trafford Star won one each. WPXI-TV, the Trib’s news partner, won three Quills and anchors David Johnson and Peggy Finnegan won the President’s Award for Lifetime Service. Wereschagin, Smeltz and Prine won the top award in the Enterprise/Investigative Article or Series category for “Failure to Disclose.â€? Togneri won a Quill in the Feature Article or Series category for “A Painful Reminder.â€? Conte received a Quill in the Business/Technology/Consumer Article or Series category for “Cyber Rattling.â€? Tribune-Review editorial cartoonist Randy Bish won a Quill in the Editorial Cartoon category.
