April 12 is a special day for the Steel City.

412 Day is a nod to the Pittsburgh area code, and it gives Yinzers a chance to celebrate the city and its traditions.

The area code was first born in 1947, but the current 412 footprint was established in 1998 — including Pittsburgh and other surrounding Allegheny County communities.

412 Day was made an official holiday in 2018 when former Mayor Bill Peduto issued a proclamation in partnership with Shop 412, a Pittsburgh-themed retailer.

Now, the social media hashtag #412Day garners enthusiastic posts every year about the day and its meaning to the Pittsburgh community.

Pittsburgh’s professional and collegiate sports teams — which are pillars to the city’s culture — chimed in for the holiday as well.

Some Pittsburgh area retailers and attractions said they’re offering deals and discounts to celebrate.

People and organizations from around Pennsylvania even sent Yinzers well wishes for 412 Day.
