Trib Total Media TV writer Rob Owen answers reader questions every Wednesday at TribLive.com in a column that also appears in the Sunday Tribune-Review. Q: Cam Tran left WTAE-TV weekend morning weather reporting a couple weeks ago for a station in Florida. Will she be replaced or will Regina Miller, who has been filling in for her, continue to report? — Cathy via email Rob: Last week WTAE’s new weekend morning meteorologist, Tran’s replacement, started at the station. In March I reported Brian Hutton Jr. would join Channel 4 from the CBS affiliate in Raleigh, N.C. Hutton grew up in Johnstown and attended California University of Pennsylvania, where he met his wife, Jenny, who is from Monroeville. WTAE general manager Charles Wolfertz III said as a freelancer Miller may continue to appear on Channel 4 as needed. Q: I know KDKA-TV’s John Shumway had been on vacation but since his return, he has been out in the field and not doing morning news. Is that by design or did he get demoted? — Paul, McKees Rocks Q: Why does John Shumway sometimes work from home? — Sally via Facebook Rob: Following Shumway’s out-of-the-area vacation, company covid-19 protocols dictate a period of self-quarantine, which is why he has been broadcasting from home, though he was expected back in the studio this week. His assignment has not changed since he started on the morning newscast last summer. He’s still in the newsroom/studio with the exception of some promos and interviews shot in the field. Q: For as long as I can remember, the anchor on the 11 p.m. KDKA-TV newscast would end the telecast with Colbert is next or before that Letterman is next. I noticed recently (maybe in the last several weeks), they no longer sign off that way. Is there a reason for the change? — Debbie, McKeesport Rob: KDKA sometimes airs promos for Colbert and sometimes mentions he’s next and they try not to duplicate the promo messaging at the end of the newscast. Q: How many more "This is Us” episodes are left this season? — Barb via email Rob: Turns out there are just three more episodes this season, bringing the total for the season to 16. Usually the show films 18 episodes per season but with pandemic delays, many broadcast network series will produce fewer episodes this year. "This is Us” will be off the air for the next several weeks, returning May 11 with the season finale set for May 25. Q: Will Fox’s "Call Me Kat” be back? — Melton via voicemail Rob: Too soon to know with any certainty. Fox will likely make a decision about the show’s future by the May upfronts when broadcast networks announce their new fall schedules. Q: Will there be new seasons of "Million Dollar Listing” (New York and Los Angeles). I imagine they couldn’t show homes with the pandemic. — Ken, Bloomfield Rob: Actually real estate transactions continued during the pandemic but exactly how they worked will be part of the new season of "Million Dollar Listing New York,” returning at 9 p.m. May 6, and "Million Dollar Listing Los Angeles,” which will launch sometime this summer.
