The Gap clothing store in Shadyside has permanently closed.
The Walnut Street store was one of only a few Gap locations remaining in the Pittsburgh area. On Friday afternoon, all of the store’s signage had been removed and the windows were covered with construction paper.
Other Gap stores in the region are at Ross Park Mall and Tanger Outlets in Washington County.
The retailer announced in October 2020 that it would close 350 of its Gap and Banana Republic stores across North America by the end of 2023 due to market conditions and online demand — “with the goal of having a smaller and healthier fleet of stores.”
It is unknown whether the Shadyside Gap store was part of any sort of consolidation plan. The Banana Republic store on Walnut Street remains open about two blocks away.
The retailer has not responded to request for comment.
In September, an employee of the Shadyside Gap location was accused of secretly taking photos of a woman in a changing room.
Jimmy Almaraz, 24, was charged with misdemeanors of possessing criminal instruments, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, and attempted invasion of privacy.
A criminal complaint said Almaraz had been employed at the store for only three days when the incident happened.
