‘Backpack Brigade’ collection
The Education Partnership is teaming up with “The Bubba Show” on Star 100.7 for the 10th annual Bazzy and Bubba Backpack Brigade.
The back-to-school supply collection event is scheduled for 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 9 at Shults Ford, McCandless. The goal is to collect new or lightly used backpacks and other essential school supplies for the Education Partnership to distribute to schools with needs for resources in southwestern Pennsylvania.
The event will be broadcast live all day on Star 100.7. Anyone who wants to support education is invited to collect supplies and drop them off throughout the day.
Last year, the collection brought in 2,565 backpacks, 9,636 pencils and $102,000 worth of school supplies, and the nine-year total is more than $500,000 worth.
The Education Partnership is a nonprofit organization supporting 79,000 students, 11,000 teachers and 201 under-resourced schools. For more information, visit theeducationpartnership.org.
Church hosts movie
On Aug. 9, Bradford Woods Community Church will show a family-friendly outdoor movie to the community about childhood imaginary friends.
The fun starts at 8 p.m. with s’mores and glowsticks, and the movie begins at 8:30. Bring a camp chair. Rain date is Aug. 10 at the same time.
Worship is every Sunday at 10 a.m., with hospitality immediately following.
On Aug. 11, the Rev. Thomas W. Caruso, guest pastor, will guide a new members service with a lunch served afterward. The community is welcome to join in worship or can call the office, 724-935-3135, if interested in membership.

Learn to play pickleball
A pickleball clinic in McCandless allows participants to learn the rules of the game, how to keep score, proper court positioning and court etiquette.
The first 1½ hours is instruction time, and the last part of the session is optional playing time.
Sessions are scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 7 and from 10 a.m to noon Aug. 18, Sept. 7 and Sept. 22 at the pickleball courts in Devlin Park, 9955 Grubbs Road. Paddles and balls are provided.
The cost is $15 for McCandless Residents and $20 for non-residents. Please wear comfortable clothes, tennis shoes and bring water.

Marshall zoning update meeting
Marshall will host a zoning update steering committee meeting addressing the Route 910 corridor at 7 p.m. Aug. 20 at the township municipal building, 525 Pleasant Hill Road.
The meeting will provide an opportunity to hear what the steering committee has considered for the area, ask questions and provide feedback.
Route 910 traffic and land use is identified as a key issue in the township’s comprehensive plan. PennDOT plans to reconfigure the Interstate 79 interchange at 910 to reduce congestion.

Marshall Community Day
Marshall Township Community Day is scheduled for Aug. 24 at Knob Hill Park. The event will start at 4 p.m. and wrap up with Zambelli Fireworks around 9:30.
Featured are live music, food and drinks, inflatable attractions, a petting zoo, Mad Science show, balloon artist, face painting, touch-a-truck area and more.
McCandless Community Day
Community Day will take place in McCandless on Sept. 14.
The event will kick off with a performance by the North Allegheny Marching Band and concludes with fireworks. Additionally, there will be rides, face painting, balloon animals, performances (including the Allegheny Brass Band) and food trucks.
Pumpkin fest vendors sought
Ascension Lutheran Church is planning its 10th annual Pumpkin Fest and Flea Market for 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 12 at 8225 Peebles Road, McCandless.
Homemade apple and pumpkin pies will be for sale, along with hot dogs, homemade soups, beverages and, of course, pumpkins.

McCandless Crossing concert series
McCandless Crossing is hosting its annual outdoor summer concert series and introduces a new jazz offering on the second Sunday afternoon of each month throughout the summer.
The weekly series runs through Sept. 30 and features local and regional performers in a variety of musical genres. Concerts take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday under the large white canopy tent on the Town Green, between Old Navy and Ethan Allen.
