The owners of Western Pennsylvania furniture giant Levin's are mulling a number of financial options with "creditors, investors and landlords" in order to sustain the company's current operations, according to a corporate official. The move is aimed at ensuring the company — Art Van LLC — "can continue serving our guests and our communities," spokeswoman Diane Charles said Tuesday. "It is premature at this time to comment further as no final decisions have been made. In the meantime, our stores are open, and it is business as usual." Art Van's owner, the Boston-based private equity firm Thomas H. Lee Partners LP, reportedly has been seeking a buyer for Michigan-based Art Van and its brands, according to reports in the Detroit News and Crain's Detroit Business. Levin's spokeswoman, Kim Tuscan, did not return numerous calls seeking comment about the developments. Founded in 1920 by a Mt. Pleasant "peddler" named Sam Levin, Levin's has grown to be one of the largest furniture and mattress retailers in Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio. It has 34 furniture and mattress showrooms, including free-standing mattress locations. In 2017, Warren, Mich.-based Art Van Furniture, following its purchase by Thomas H. Lee Partners, acquired Levin's and Altoona-based Wolf Furniture. At the time of the sale, officials touted the deal and said everything at the new acquisitions would stay the same. Founded in 1959 by Art Van Elslander, Art Van Furniture has 77 locations in six states, not including its other brands.
