Natalie Shugars has sung this song before. Sort of. “I wrote a different version of it a couple of years ago,â€? Shugars says of “I Love Black ‘n’ Gold,â€? which she will perform Friday night at Rock Steelers Style 2017: Football, Family & Fun. “The original one was specific to that one team. This is a more timeless version,â€? she says. Less time is the only time Shugars, 35, seems to have these days. Her day job is overseeing special events for Three Rivers Entertainment & Production. Most nights she is practicing or performing with local band In The Mood. And you may recognize her as brand ambassador for Pittsburgh Dental Spa. This week she had a concert in Cleveland (Tuesday), a rehearsal (Thursday) and the Steelers fashion event (Friday). Q: You’ve modeled for Maxim and been honored by ESPN Radio, which isn’t something a lot of people can claim. What else should we know about you? A: Before I came back home from being on the road, I used to make my band crazy because I wouldn’t miss a Steelers game. I knew where the Steelers bar was in the city we were in, and I was there to watch the game. It didn’t matter if I should be catching up on sleep or doing laundry or working on my own stuff — if the Steelers played, I was at a Steelers bar watching the game with Steelers fans. Q: Was it that being around Steelers fans made you feel less homesick or are you just that dedicated as a fan? A: I’m from Latrobe. We always thought of Pittsburgh as “the big city,â€? but the Steelers were as much our team as anybody’s, so I’ve always been crazy for them. As a girl, I would watch games with my dad and grandfather. Q: So you are a card-carrying member of the Steelers Nation. Is that why you wrote I Love Black ‘n’ Gold? A: Well, I had moved back here because I didn’t want that road life. I figured I would settle down, get married, start a family, all of that stuff. So I was the VFD Fire Hall in Lloydsville one day with my friend, she and I were drinking Rolling Rocks, and we just decided there needed to be a new Steelers song. It started that way and took off. The band I was in, The MercedeZ, ended up playing it at Heinz Field for that AFC title game against the Ravens. Q: What’s it going to take for Pittsburghers to get a song that isn’t about the sports teams? A: Exactly. It’s time the city of Pittsburgh had an anthem. You might want to check back with me on that one. Rock Steelers Style starts at 6 p.m. today at Stage AE, on Pittsburgh’s North Side. Tickets are $200 to $750.
