Ruth G. Crumrine, 96, of Oakmont, passed away peacefully on Aug. 1, 2024. She was formerly of Wooster, OH; Roaring Spring and Martinsburg; Troy, OH; and several other communities. Born Aug. 20, 1927, Ruth spent her nearly 97 years, creating a meaningful life. In her early twenties, she entered Church of the Brethren's Brethren Volunteer Service (BVS). As a part of Unit 5, she was assigned to work on service projects in New Windsor, MD. She was secretary to the administrative director of Heifer Project, and consistently promoted involvement opportunities for women, including to help transport livestock to impoverished communities in Europe after World War II. It was through BVS that she met her husband-to-be, Gale. They married in 1952 upon his return from Europe, where he helped with refugee placement, building projects, and Heifer project. They continued their commitment to service, especially through the ministry. She earned her bachelors degree in education while her children were young, using it to teach elementary aged children in the communities her husband served as reverend or nursing home administrator. At age 60, she pursued an associate's degree in social work for working in a local nursing home. They retired to Oakmont, in the late 1990s, where she continued volunteering. She enjoyed travel, coconut treats, bird watching from her porch, shooing squirrels from the bird feeders, and creating various crafts (especially reed baskets). Ruth was the beloved mother of, Carol (Graydon) Brewer of Oakmont, David (Dawn) Crumrine of Roaring Spring, and Duane (Jo) Crumrine of Martinsburg. She loved having her grandchildren around her, Kelsey Avvampato (Kyle Allen), Kristin Avvampato (Paul Janowicz), Kyle (Brittany) Avvampato, Troy (Mary) Avvampato, Chad (Tori) Avvampato, Dana (Chris) Aavampato, and Cari (Aaron) Avvampato. She adored her seven great-grandchildren, (Chase, Morgan, Lucas, Addison, Jackolyn, Grant, and Brooks) and loved watching them grow. She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Rev. Gale D. Crumrine; her parents, (Viola and Mahlon L. Geesaman); siblings, (Paul, Mahlon, and Sarah), and their spouses. Services will be determined at a future date.
