Apollo-Ridge used the element of surprise to get its first win of the season. Mollie Charlton laid down a suicide-squeeze bunt, scoring Tessa DeSimone in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Apollo-Ridge a 4-3 walk-off win in a nonsection game against Riverview on Thursday. DeSimone hit a one-out triple before the successful squeeze play. Charlton won in relief of starter Mariah Laird, pitching three scoreless innings, and also tripled at the plate. Laird struck out nine batters in four innings. Sadie Buchser doubled for Riverview (0-2). Leechburg 9, Jeannette 2 — The Blue Devils scored four runs in the second inning and rolled past nonsection opponent Jeannette (0-1). Morgan Pierce pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters and giving up two hits for Leechburg (1-2). Kristen Knapp went 2 for 4 with an RBI, Lexie Young added a double and an RBI, and Tessa Verner doubled with two RBIs for the Blue Devils. Freeport 8, Karns City 2 — Kristie Radvan gave up five hits and struck out 10 batters in seven innings to give Freeport a nonsection win. Kristen Karcher went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and Allison DeJidas went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Freeport (3-0). Deer Lakes 13, Illinois Catholic, Ill. 0 (5 inn.) — Danielle Huffman went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs for Class AA No. 1 Deer Lakes (2-0) in a win at the Ripken Experience tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Shae Robson hit a two-run, inside-the-park home run, and Maria Taliani and Brittany Dengler tripled. Stephanie Drapela pitched five shutout innings to earn the victory. Deer Lakes 10, Rossford, Ohio 0 (6 inn.) — Shae Robson doubled and drove in three runs and struck out six batters in five shutout innings as Deer Lakes blanked Rossford at the Ripken Experience tournament in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Maureen Hutchinson, Chrissy Huffman and Katelynn Blair doubled and drove in a pair of runs each. Steel Valley 4, Highlands 0 — Steel Valley scored three runs in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie as Highlands suffered its first loss of the season in a nonsection meeting. Pitcher Emily Cochran took the loss for Highlands (2-1). Connellsville 5, Kiski Area 1— Erin Weaver pitched a complete game and had four strikeouts, but Kiski Area (0-4, 0-2) dropped a Section 1-AAAA game. Mia Burd struck out eight and didn’t allow an earned run for Connellsville (1-1, 1-1). Greensburg C.C. 18, Springdale 3 (3 inn.) — Greensburg Central Catholic (1-0) scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning on its way to a nonsection win. Felicity Orndoff and Emma Taormina were 3 for 4 for the Centurions. Kelley DeSantis took the loss for Springdale (1-3). Baseball Freeport 12, Apollo-Ridge 1 (5 inn.)— The Yellowjackets scored four runs in the second inning and rolled past Apollo-Ridge in a nonsection matchup. Josh Beale went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Freeport (4-0). Nevin DeCroo went 2 for 3 with one RBI, Derek Jones 2 for 2 with one RBI, and Nate Smith added a double and an RBI for the Yellowjackets. Tyler Hettich gave up three hits through three innings to get the win. Noah Sadler went 1 for 2 with an RBI, and Brady Neal singled twice for Apollo-Ridge (0-2). Springdale 11, Cornell 3 — Alex Pane singled four times and scored three runs to help Springdale (1-2) notch its first win of the season in a nonsection game at Cornell (0-3). Zach Lepish, Andy Armour and Zach Simcic all doubled for the Dynamos. Lepish was the winning pitcher, striking out four in 4 1â?„3 innings.
