Sister bakers Courtney Kobelenske and Kylie Lash decided from Day One that their cupcake business would be dedicated to helping children in need. The owners of Cora Lee Cupcakes will continue their mission with their second fundraiser Aug. 2 at Burrell Lake Park, Lower Burrell. Since creating Cora Lee Cupcakes in March 2013, the sisters have built a website, introduced new flavors and opened a storefront along Leechburg Road in Lower Burrell. Like their first fundraiser at Wildlife Lodge Lanes in October 2013, the proceeds will benefit Bon Air Elementary School's special-education department. Cora Lee, Kobelenske's 9-year-old daughter, will be a second-grader at Bon Air in the fall. The sisters named the shop after Cora Lee, who is on the autism spectrum and has a learning disability. Kobelenske says her primary concern is teaching kids that, while everyone is different, each person is special in his or her own way. The sisters travel to day-care centers and other children's facilities and give interactive presentations to spread their message. “We want to teach kids that we're all the same on the inside, Kobelenske says. “We talk about bullying and other issues kids face. We have them decorate their cupcakes differently, but show them that everybody likes them just the same. The sisters' mini “cupcakes for a cause come in more than 15 kid-approved flavors, the most popular being PB&J, s'mores and mint chocolate chip. They named flavors after Lash's children, Parker (Perfect Parker), age 5; Caroline (Sweet Caroline), 1; and Kobelenske's oldest daughter, Emma (Emma M's), 11. The fundraiser will have games for kids and adults, face-painting, tattoos, prizes and performances by magician Al Mazing. Kazoo The Kangaroo will entertain kids throughout the event, and local dance-rock band Cherry Red will hit the stage at 6 p.m. Creative Catering and Fat Cat Subs will have food available for purchase. Kobelenske says it is extra-rewarding to support Bon Air Elementary, because the teachers are able to choose and purchase the materials that best address the children's needs with the money received. “(The teachers) are so great with Cora, she says. “We just want to make sure they get what they need and can benefit from. Emma Deihle is a staff writer for Trib Total Media.
