LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Joey Chestnut set a new world record by consuming 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes, defeating his longtime rival Takeru Kobayashi in a hot dog eating contest in Las Vegas in the Netflix Hot Dog Eating Championship. The contest followed the same format as the infamous Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest held in Coney Island, New York. Chestnut surpassed his previous record of 76 hot dogs, while Kobayashi reached his personal best of 66. This marked the first time the two champions faced off in 15 years. Competitors were not allowed to dunk or pour water on the hot dogs; they were also not allowed to separate the beef franks from the bun; penalties were assessed for excess crumbs or regurgitation. Joey Chestnut made national news recently when the 16-time Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest champion was disinvited from this year's Coney Island competition after signing with Impossible Foods and its vegan hot dog.
