Tight end Matt Spaeth checks his cellphone more than usual these days, and there is good reason. He and his wife, Becky, are expecting their first child in two weeks — about when training camp is set to wrap up. “It is something that I am really excited about,â€? Spaeth said. “I can’t wait for it to happen. But when I am here and I am on the field, I really don’t think about it. As a football player, you have to learn to be able to separate the two, your football life and your personal life.â€? Spaeth said his wife has multiple ways to get in touch with him when he is on the practice field through various team personnel members. Spaeth said he’s hoping his baby — a girl — will be born after training camp. “It would be hard leaving them to come back here,â€? Spaeth said. Spaeth said he will be at his wife’s side for the birth of his daughter even if it means missing a preseason game. • Special teams coordinator Danny Smith said he plans to use newly acquired cornerback Brandon Boykin on special teams, possibly as a gunner and/or jammer. “He is a good player, good athlete, good worker and has a lot of positive attributes,â€? Smith said. . Once he learns our system, he will be right in there.â€? Smith said he will look at Boykin as a returner as well. Boykin returned punts his senior year at Georgia but did so sparingly with the Eagles during his three years there. He was more of an accomplished kick returner in college, averaging 24.2 yards per return over his final three seasons. • Safety Ross Ventrone missed the past week with a sprained ankle that required him to wear a walking boot for a period of time. Ventrone is out of the boot but unsure when he will return to the field. “It has progressed every day,â€? Ventrone said. “Hopefully sooner than later. It is feeling good every day. I am just trying to get back as fast as I can.â€? Ventrone has missed six practices. • The Steelers released their first official depth chart Tuesday. There were no surprises.
