“Yo quiero Taco Bellâ€? could soon be a popular phrase in Harrison. That’s because one is set to open Friday at Highlands Mall along Freeport Road. “This Friday, at 11 a.m., we should open up and start selling some tacos,â€? said Brian Hughes, a market coach for Charter Foods LLC, the franchise that operates the Natrona Heights restaurant. “We’ll be good to go.â€? The township planning commission in May unanimously approved plans for the Tennessee-based company to build the Mexican-inspired eatery at 4009 Freeport Road. It’s between the Goodwill store and O’Reilly Auto Parts, in front of Wal-Mart. Another Taco Bell is expected to open in Harmar before the end of the year, Hughes said. Commissioner Chuck Dizard oversees Harrison’s zoning and ordinance office. He said residents are excited about the Taco Bell, one of several recent developments along the Freeport Road corridor. The others are Sheetz, Burger King and a relocated CVS. “I wish we had more diversÂity of businesses, more diversity of restaurants, but you (have) to start somewhere,â€? Dizard said. “These are good businesses. It’s new construction. It’s good.â€? Taco Bell will be open from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week through the winter months and later during the summer months, Hughes said. Coming soon: Freedom Square Diner The Taco Bell is not the only restaurant slated to open in the Highlands Mall complex. The site of the former Tres Amigos Mexican Grill will be the family-owned Freedom Square Diner. The diner, which also has locations in Cranberry, Monaca and Verona, took over the 4,000-square-foot space in early September, co-owner Shawn Cross said. “The owner of the shopping center called us and said they had a spot we might be interested in,â€? Cross said. “We came and looked at it, and it fit what we were looking for.â€? The diner will have 25 tables and a counter, Cross said. Owners are shooting for an Oct. 30 opening date. The menu will feature American comfort foods such as burgers, sandwiches and breakfast items. Hours will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. Dizard said the diner also will be a good addition to the township. “It’s all positive,â€? Dizard said. Madasyn Czebiniak is a Tribune-Review staff writer.
