The North Hills Toastmasters Club began meeting in West View on July 1, 1957 and has continually met at various locations, mostly churches, in the North Hills area. During the recent pandemic, the North Hills Club met virtually on Zoom and last October resumed in-person meetings at the Heritage Presbyterian Church at 2262 Rochester Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15237. The club meets on the first, third, and fifth Thursday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. The North Hills Toastmasters Club is one of the largest and most active clubs in the Western PA area and has earned the Toastmasters President’s Distinguished Award for the past 18 consecutive years. As part of the club’s Annual Awards Banquet on June 16, 2022, new club officers were installed for the 2022 – 2023 Toastmasters Year. They include: Susan Meyer, President; Karl Matos, Vice President of Education; Melissa Krause, Vice President of Membership; Richard Ley, Vice President of Public Relations; Chad Hudson, Secretary; Anna Sella, Treasurer; and JoAnn Walk, Sergeant At Arms. During the Annual Awards Banquet, a number of educational awards were presented to club members as well as two main awards for the evening. The Most Improved Toastmaster Award was presented to Hansraj Sao, who as the Club’s Sergeant At Arms worked to provide an excellent technical infrastructure for the hybrid meetings so members could have a meaningful experience in the club meetings, whether in-person or remotely. . The Outstanding Toastmaster Award went to Christopher Bondi, who earned two separate educational awards and won speech contests at the Club, Area, and Division levels. He went on to compete in the District 13 speech contests in April. The mission of all Toastmasters clubs is to provide a supportive and positive learning experience in which members are empowered to develop communication and leadership skills, resulting in greater self-confidence and personal growth. The North Hills Club takes the mission seriously by providing one-on-one mentoring for new members as they begin their Toastmasters journey, gain confidence speaking in front of a friendly and supportive group of peers, and work the educational program at their own pace.
