Whiskey and Weavers Event Brings Powerful Celtic Music and Scotch Tasting to The Lindsay; Proceeds Benefit Local Piping and Drumming Program
An afternoon of great music and fine spirits is in store at The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center Sunday, May 5 with Whiskey and Weavers. The screening of a live concert film featuring the Tannahill Weavers (recorded at the Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Center in October 2023) will be preceded by a Scotch whiskey tasting to benefit the Balmoral Classic: U.S. Junior Solo Piping & Drumming Championships, an annual event held in Pittsburgh each fall. "Scotland's Tannahill Weavers play acoustic instruments, but the atmosphere at their shows is electric," says the Boston Globe. "The quintet is as tight and as versatile as any band in the Celtic music revival. They can summon rock 'n' roll intensity or haunting introspection." The event is presented in partnership with Pittsburgh's Balmoral School of Piping & Drumming. The Scotch tasting begins at 2 p.m. and the film at 3 p.m. Tickets are available for the film alone, or for both events. Born of a session in Paisley, Scotland, and named for the town's historic weaving industry and local poet laureate Robert Tannahill, the Tannahill Weavers are internationally known for their unique take on Celtic music, blending beautiful traditional melodies with powerful modern rhythms. Their diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, topical songs, original ballads and lullabies, and humorous tales of life in Scotland. From reflective ballads to foot-stomping reels and jigs, the variety and range of the material they perform is matched only by their enthusiasm and lively Celtic spirits. The Weavers concert at the Pittsburgh Masonic Center "was a highlight of our year," says Balmoral executive director George Balderose. "The May 5 screening is a great way to share that experience and spread awareness of traditional Scottish music to the community." The Lindsay is an independent nonprofit theater located at 418 Walnut St., Sewickley.

Top Home Remodeling Tips for a Senior Friendly Bathroom
As we age and get older, our needs for a functional, happy life change. That being said, so do our homes as well. One of the most important areas of the home that needs to be adapted for people getting up into their seniors is the bathroom. The bathroom is a space in the home where people spend a lot of time, and it needs to be safe and easy for them to use. Here are some home remodeling tips for a senior-friendly bathrooms in Greensburg. Install Grab Bars Grab bars are a must for any senior-friendly bathroom. These bars provide support and stability for seniors when getting in and out of the shower, tub or even when using the toilet. Installing grab bars will instantly increase the safety in any senior's bathroom. Consider a Walk-In Bathtub Walk-in tubs were originally designed for seniors and people with other disabilities. These types of tubs have a low threshold for an easy entry and exit. The tubs also come equipped with built-in seats, meaning a seat will not need to be added on after the tub is installed. Walk-in Tubs are a safe and comfortable option for seniors, along with people with other disabilities, who have trouble getting in and out of a traditional bathtub. Install Non-Slip Flooring Slippery surfaces can be dangerous for seniors, especially in the bathroom and around their shower or bath. Installing a non-slip floor, such as vinyl or even a cork floor, can prevent slips and falls from happening in the bathroom. Install a Raised Toilet Seat As people get older, it becomes more difficult to get up from a low seat, whether that be their seat at the kitchen table or their toilet in the bathroom. Installing a raised toilet seat can make it easier for seniors to use the toilet without straining their knees and hips. This will create a better bathroom experience for them without sacrificing safety. Consider a Curbless or Low Threshold Shower Curbless and low threshold showers can be another safe and accessible option for seniors as well as people with other types of disabilities and movement issues. The curbless shower has no threshold while the low threshold has a little bit of a threshold, which makes it easy for seniors to get in and out of the shower safely. It is also safer for people with disabilities and other movement issues. Contact Mt. Pleasant Window & Remodeling Today! JFilm Festival Brings Engaging Jewish Films to Pittsburgh
Film Pittsburgh's JFilm Festival, the largest Jewish cultural event in the region, will screen May 2-12 at three theaters around Pittsburgh. This is the 31st year for this highly anticipated event, which brings engaging independent Jewish-themed films to Pittsburgh. This year, JFilm will present 16 films, six of which will be available to screen virtually. "Independent films are so impactful in people's lives." said Kathryn Spitz Cohan, Film Pittsburgh's executive director. "Sometimes they feed your mind by showing you some incredible little-known history like in 999: The Forgotten Girls and other times they feed your heart by transporting you to another time like the visit to the great resorts of The Catskills. But one thing is for sure: independent films always add a richness to the human experience." JFilm will screen at the Carnegie Music Hall, the Oaks Theater, and CMU's McConomy Auditorium. The festival will include Q&As with visiting filmmakers, a Mother's Day screening with sweet bakery treats, scholar-led Film Schmooze discussions, and more. One highlight will be opening night's Pittsburgh premiere of Left Alone Rhapsody: The Musical Memoir of Pianist John Bayless at the newly restored Carnegie Music Hall in Oakland. The film, sponsored by The Arthur J. and Betty F. Diskin Cultural Endowment Fund of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, tells the inspiring story of Bayless, a Leonard Bernstein protégé and successful concert pianist and composer who suffered a debilitating stroke, and his heroic efforts to continue playing with his left hand alone. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Bayless and director Stewart Schulman. John Bayless will also play several songs before a dessert reception in the Music Hall's Foyer. In other films to watch for, Spitz Cohan says, "We're excited for our audience to look back at some beloved pop culture icons in Remembering Gene Wilder and Shari & Lamb Chop. These lovely documentaries will have you revisiting happy memories with film and TV legends who were a big part of so many people's lives." Lawrenceville businesses clean up Butler Street
Armed with gloves, trash pickers, bags, and bins, Lawrenceville business owners, representatives, and residents joined with Lawrenceville Corporation for an annual 'Butler Street Clean-up." From 2 to 4 p.m., participants divided and conquered the lower and central Lawrenceville area, picking up litter from the streets and sidewalks up to 47th Street. About a dozen trash bags were filled, and recyclables were accounted for and placed separately, so that all of the waste would be disposed of properly. Afterwards, we enjoyed beverages on the Rooftop of Field Day, located on Butler Street. Stay tuned for more clean-up efforts facilitated by Lawrenceville Corporation and other neighborhood organizations.
