Plum approves change to Sheetz liquor license

Plum Council has amended its approval for a liquor license for Sheetz on Golden Mile Highway.

Council in 2021 approved the transfer of a liquor license to the existing Sheetz at Pine Valley Drive. The Altoona-based convenience store chain asked to move it to a new store under construction nearby at Presque Isle Drive.

The new store, built where a Kings restaurant previously stood, is expected to open in May.

Food pantry available for those in need

The Plum Food Pantry, 81 Sandune Drive, distributes free food from 5 to 6:30 p.m. the first three Tuesdays of each month.

Plum School District looking for bus, van drivers

The Plum School District is hiring bus and van drivers.

Bus drivers are paid a base rate of $23.45 per hour; van drivers are paid $18. An overtime rate of $33.90 is available beyond 40 hours per week for bus drivers for field trips and activity and athletic runs.

Van drivers can be paid while completing training for a commercial drivers license with school bus driver certification.

Bus aide and substitute bus driver positions are also available. Bus aides are paid a base rate of $16.75 per hour.

Library offers program in history of Kaufmann’s

The Plum Community Library will offer a historical program “The History of Kaufmann’s Department Store: Everything Under the Sun!” at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 29 at the library, 445 Center New Texas Road.

Robert O. Stakely from the Senator John Heinz History Center will be the speaker.

Rotary scholarships available to high school seniors

Applications are being sought for the Bob Williams Rotary Memorial Scholarship Program for the 2023-24 academic year.

Eight need-based scholarships of $5,000 each will be awarded.

High school seniors in Allegheny County are eligible to apply, as are vocational students, GED students and those attending parochial, charter and private schools.

Students must have a 2.5 or higher grade-point average and must complete an essay highlighting their community/school service.

Complete application and criteria materials are available on the Rotary District 7305 website or from area high school counselors.

Applications must be postmarked by Feb. 29.

Take Off Pounds Sensibly meets Tuesday evenings

The Oakmont TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) chapter, a support group to help those struggling with weight loss, meets Tuesday evenings at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 1261 Pennsylvania Ave. in Oakmont. Meetings begin with a private weigh-in between 5:45 and 6:10 p.m.
