A plarn Workshop will be held on Jan. 30 from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the Gathering Space at St. James Church. We will start the New Year cutting and winding plastic loops into plarn. We can always use cutters, so please join us. Bring scissors and if you can crochet, bring a large hook, size ‘N’.

Right before Christmas, six mats were given out by Sewing Seeds Volunteers. They were well received by those living on the street.

The Sewickley United Methodist Church has two services each Sunday: 9 a.m. contemporary, featuring our praise band Leap of Faith; and 11 a.m. traditional, with nursery care and children’s ministries during both services.

St. Brendan’s Episcopal Church

St. Brendan’s is an open, welcoming and active church that holds in-person worship with Eucharist at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Sundays and 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Nursery coverage is available for children at the Sunday 10 o’clock service, which is livestreamed on YouTube.

The church holds a monthly Children’s Service at 10 a.m. on the fourth Sunday of each month, inviting young members to take part by reading and serving during the liturgy. Due to the Annual Parish Meeting on Jan. 26, however, a single service will be held at 9 a.m. and there will be no Children’s Service.

The Modern Episcopalians will resume weekly meetings on Thursdays at 7 p.m. via Zoom beginning Jan. 23. The group will be reading and discussing “Paul: A Biography,” by N.T. St. Brendan’s Justice Ministry is seeking new members. Parishioners with a keen interest in social justice and its many causes are invited to attend a meeting on Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. to discuss and plan activities for the new year.

The Book Club will discuss “James” by Percival Everett at 1 p.m., Feb. 3 in the library. The novel is a re-telling of “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” from the perspective of Huckleberry’s friend, Jim, an escaped slave.

Every month, Saint Luke the Evangelist hosts a sensory-friendly Mass for those who may find it challenging to attend a typical Sunday Liturgy. This Mass is intentionally designed to lessen environmental stimulus to provide a prayerful, welcoming and nonjudgmental worship experience for everyone in the parish. Families with small children, individuals with Autism, asthma, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, Down’s Syndrome, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and adults with dementia and Alzheimer’s can worship in an environment that respects their individuality and lovingly incorporates them as accepted and celebrated members of the parish community. While it is geared toward people with sensory issues, all people are welcome to attend this Mass.

St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will hold Foodie Fridays on the last Friday of each month. Soups and a variety of foods will be available to take out or eat in, beginning at 11:30 a.m. until sold out.

Dates are Jan. 31, Feb. 28 and March 28.

The menu for Jan. 31 is as follows: broccoli cheese soup, black bean soup, chili, pasta with meat sauce, kielbasa and sauerkraut, Filipino noodles.

All items are $6 each. The soup is a 16-ounce serving.

The Kids’ Community Closet is a “free-cycle” community space to share kids’ clothes (birth through size 14/16). All clothing is free and in good, very gently used condition — some items still have tags on. There are no applications, income requirements, or donations necessary.
