Sewickley Academy eighth graders explored Washington, D.C., in February, visiting many iconic monuments to enrich their knowledge of history, science and culture.
Students visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History and the National Air and Space Museum.
Each museum selected corresponded with ongoing curriculum topics learned in school.
The annual trip is available to all eighth-graders, and they spend two nights in the nation’s capital.
Other visit stops included the Washington, Lincoln, World War II, Iwo Jima, Korean War and Vietnam Veterans memorials.
Students Charlotte Coleman, Kristen Fiedler, Madison Milkovich and Charlotte Morton were selected after winning the grade 8 essay contest to participate in the laying of a wreath during the Changing of the Guard at Arlington National Cemetery.
Student Madison Milkovich said participating in the wreath-laying ceremony was enlightening.
“It was eye-opening to learn how much the soldiers dedicated themselves to guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. I felt proud to lay the wreath because it was my way of honoring the fallen soldiers who fought for this country,” Milkovich said.
