The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center is revisiting one of cinema’s best decades with its Summer Series.

Titled “Nine on ’90s,” the series includes a wide variety of classics from the last decade of the 20th century, from romances to thrillers to science fiction movies. Catch these movies through Aug. 27.

“As an independent theater, we pride ourselves on doing these special programs,” said Carolina Thor, president and CEO of The Lindsay Theater. “Our summer series has become highly anticipated.”

This year’s theme owes itself to the recent surge of ’90s nostalgia, Thor said. From music to fashion, the decade of grunge rock, babydoll dresses and great blockbuster films is showing back up throughout pop culture.

The series kicks off on June 4 and 14 with the 30th anniversary of “Jerry Maguire,” starring Tom Cruise and Renee Zellweger. Robert Redford-directed “A River Runs Through It” will show on June 9 and 21. And crank up “Unchained Melody,” as “Ghost” is coming to the theater on June 16 and 28.

Everyone will want to see Steven Spielberg’s dinosaur film “Jurassic Park” on June 25 and July 5. Next, Denzel Washington and Julia Roberts star in “The Pelican Brief,” showing July 9 and 19. “Boyz N the Hood” will celebrate its 35th anniversary July 26 and Aug. 4.

Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone will thrill in “Basic Instinct” on Aug. 2 and 13. Don’t miss Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz in “The Mask” on Aug. 9 and 20. And end the summer with a bang with “Thelma and Louise” — also celebrating 35 years — on Aug. 16 and 27.

Thor is especially excited for “A River Runs Through It.”

“It’s a little different than the other titles. … I’m a big Robert Redford fan,” she said.

While the films have a little bit of a bias towards adult audiences, Thor said that The Lindsay will be showing plenty of current family blockbusters this summer and they wanted to give the grown-ups a reason to come to the movies.

“We chose to make the Summer Series a little more inviting to those who actually lived through the decade,” she said.

But for fans of the theater who are disappointed not to see the summer tradition “Cinema Paradiso” on this list, Thor wanted to offer reassurance.

“We have screened it every year since 2017 in the late summer. We’re not announcing the date yet; it will be shared soon,” she said.
