A year ago, Greensburg Central Catholic scored 435 points and cruised to a repeat of the Trib Sports Cup championship.
This year, the Centurions collected 140 fewer points than last year, but it was enough to edge Winchester Thurston for a third straight Class A Sports Cup. It is the school’s sixth Trib Sports Cup in the last seven years.
“GCC athletes and coaches work hard at every sport, and many of the athletes play multiple sports, so it’s a great honor for them to get this recognition,” Greensburg Central Catholic baseball coach John Boyle said.
The Centurions remain alone in third place overall behind North Allegheny (23) and Sewickley Academy (13) with 12 Sports Cups.
The Trib Sports Cup is a yearlong competition in 26 team sports to determine the top WPIAL sports program in each classification. Schools earn points for section or conference championships, WPIAL playoff berths and district postseason success, state playoff berths and PIAA championships.
Greensburg Central Catholic earned points in 10 sports to edge Class A runner-up Winchester Thurston, which had points in nine sports.
Leading the way for the Centurions was the girls basketball team, which finished second to Shady Side Academy in Section 2-3A, lost to SSA in the WPIAL Class 3A championship game, but then defeated Cranberry, Northwestern, Camp Hill Trinity and Shady Side Academy in the state playoffs and Holy Redeemer in the PIAA title game, 52-41.
It was the school’s second girls basketball state crown and first since 1997.
The GCC baseball team was near perfect, losing its first game in the WPIAL Class A final to Eden Christian Academy, 5-1.
“We had a superior core of three seniors; Anthony Grippo, Tyler Samede and Alec Martic, who provided great leadership and a burning desire to play well beyond the regular season,” Boyle said.
“I expected our team to be good this season, but the boys had other expectations, they were great. It was the first undefeated regular season in Centurions baseball history, a WPIAL finals appearance and a strong showing in the first round of the PIAA tournament. In all, it was a very satisfying season that exceeded my expectations.”
Also chipping in with strong seasons were the Greensburg Central Catholic girls golf, boys cross country and boys track and field teams.
Rounding out the point total was the football, boys and girls soccer, boys basketball and girls track and field teams.
For a second straight year, Winchester Thurston was close, but finished in second place, 25 points behind GCC.
Rounding out the Top 5 in Class A were Sewickley Academy in third, Serra Catholic in fourth and Eden Christian Academy in fifth place.
