We have an injury update on Pittsburgh Steelers rookie receiver Roman Wilson. A former Steeler has joined the Baltimore Ravens. Another NFL receiver is getting paid. A Staal brother is retiring from the NHL. And an ex-Pirate is coming back to PNC Park this weekend in the other team’s uniform.

All that in Wednesday’s “First Call.”

Worried about Wilson

The Steelers wide receiver depth chart is spotty enough as it is. It didn’t need the loss of a promising rookie so early in training camp.

But third-round draft pick Roman Wilson hurt his ankle during Tuesday’s practice. The injury didn’t look great at the time, as Wilson needed a cart to help leave the practice field.

According to two national reports, though, the former Michigan Wolverine may not miss too much time.

Both ESPN.com’s Jeremy Fowler and NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport posted similar messages on social media Tuesday, suggesting the injury may be a week-to-week thing. Neither inferred that Wilson suffered a fracture of any kind nor did it look like he’d be in danger of missing the regular-season opener.

With Marquez Callaway being released Tuesday, that’s two players removed from the immediate wide receiver competition at Saint Vincent College. Their absences open the door even more for the likes of Van Jefferson, Scotty Miller, Calvin Austin III, Quez Watkins, Deuce Watts and Dez Fitzpatrick.

More for Moore

In the era of huge money for NFL wide receivers, the latest one to get paid is D.J. Moore. The Chicago Bears pass catcher just signed an extension to stay in the Windy City for another four years. Rapoport said it’s a $110 million extension with $82.6 million guaranteed.

If frequently rumored Steelers trade target Brandon Aiyuk is doing any comps in San Francisco and I’m sure he is Moore will be making a new-money average of $27.5 million of the extension.

Via ProFootballTalk.com, Moore had two years left on his prior contract at $15.85 million this year and $14.85 million in 2025. He’s now locked up for six years at $130.35 million.

Aiyuk is holding out on playing for $14.1 million via his fifth-year option. Moore was sixth in the NFL in receiving yards last year with 1,364. Aiyuk was seventh at 1,342.

Moore had eight touchdowns. Aiyuk had seven. Moore had 96 catches. Aiyuk had 75. But Aiyuk was second in the NFL with a 17.9 yards per catch average, trailing only the Steelers’ George Pickens.

From Black and Gold to Baltimore

Former Steelers outside linebacker Quincy Roche is signing with the AFC North rival Baltimore Ravens.

That’s because defensive end Malik Hamm had to go on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Injuries to Penn State’s Adisa Isaac and former second-round pick David Ojabo (who is coming back from an ACL) have left the Ravens thin on the edge.

A sixth-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2021, Roche was waived at the end of August during his rookie year but claimed by the New York Giants.

In New York, Roche appeared in 17 games over two seasons with the Giants, recording 40 tackles and 2.5 sacks. The former Miami Hurricane returned to Pittsburgh in January of 2023 but was waived in August.

He then wound up with the Minnesota Vikings in October and stayed there for the rest of the year before becoming a free agent.

Ring that Bell

Prior to their acquisitions of Bryan De La Cruz and Isiah Kiner-Falefa on Tuesday, many in the baseball prospecting business wondered if the Pirates may consider bringing Josh Bell back to Pittsburgh.

That didn’t happen. But he may still be on the field at PNC Park this weekend … in the other dugout.

Bell was acquired by the Arizona Diamondbacks from the Miami Marlins for cash considerations. The DBacks are in Pittsburgh for three games this weekend.

Arizona (57-51) is currently in fourth place in the National League Wild Card standings, a half game behind San Diego for the final playoff spot. The Pirates (55-52) are tied for fifth with the St. Louis Cardinals. They are both two games back.

This season, Bell is hitting .239 with 14 homers, 49 RBIs and an OPS of .699. Over a five-year run in Pittsburgh, Bell hit 86 homers as a Pirate and has 166 for his career.

Not that one

A Staal is retiring as a Carolina Hurricane. But it’s not former Pittsburgh Penguins Stanley Cup champion Jordan Staal.

It’s his older brother, Eric. The franchise has announced that it has signed former captain Eric Staal to a one-day contract so that he can retire in Raleigh. He most recently played with the Florida Panthers in 2022-23.

The Canes also revealed that Staal’s No. 12 will be retired.

The 39-year-old Staal played 12 seasons with Carolina. He was the captain there from 2010-16 and is the club’s all-time team leader in goals (322), assists (453) and points (775). In 2005-06, Staal racked up 100 points in the regular season and added 28 more in the playoffs as the Hurricanes won the franchise’s lone Stanley Cup.

As for 35-year-old Jordan, he has been the Canes’ captain since 2019.
