Unique Intimate housing to help women and families in need achieve their goals
Nestled in Penn Hills, The Muslim Women's Association of Pittsburgh's Guest House provides clean, safe, and peaceful shelter for women and their families who qualify. That's what we do best. The home is maintained and supervised by volunteers, we have no paid staff, and is first come first serve. Financial needs of the Guest House are met by individual donations and proceeds from the Few of a Kind Store. The Guest House is the newest project of the Muslim Women's Association of Pittsburgh, which has had a Pittsburgh chapter for over 100 years. It's currently going in to it's 10th year of operation. Before a woman becomes a guest, an intake is conducted so that we have a good idea if they'll be compatable with the other women staying in the house. Also, their goals are accounted for, and many women have goals to get a more permenant living situation, a job, remedy family challenges, or if they're a student visiting, etc. The number one qualifiation though, they have no other place to go. We do refer guests as needed to resources that are available to any citizen, and give them bus passes so they can get to where they need to be to access these resources. We try to assist and make recommendations, we refer guests to organizations such as a free medical clinic in Braddock, local food banks, public schools, the free stores nearby, public housing, and more. Since it is a smaller house, we only take 10 guests at a time; we are not number driven, we want to do a quality job for whoever is here with us. Our rules are consistent with most guest houses, like human relations amongst residents and limited stay. The recommended stay is usually 3 months, but we can modify that timing according to the needs of the guest. We're regulary checking in with the guests to make sure they are working towards their goals, and up to date technology is available as well. Our main policy: if there's space, no guest that qualifies will be turned away, and no guest is forced to leave, unless they have a place to go. This is a place that originally, we thought it would service moslty Muslim women. But we've found that there are other women who qualify but who aren't Muslim, and if there's room, we take them. Women have different needs, and a more intimate family setting allows them to have those needs met. We exist to meet the unique needs for each woman - we look at them indivdually, not generally. Some have practices that are not accomodated to in public settings or other shelters. We give our guests a quiet, peaceful setting where women can reflect on their situation and plan for their futures. Sometimes, friendships develop within the house, and relationships last past the time they are living at the shelter. Some women even decide to live together after their time at the guest house. Other community food stores, like Paddy Cake Bakery in Bloomfield, Saleem's in the Hill District, and churches, have offered the Guest House free items for the guests, like food, coffee, etc. We are always looking to partner with other organizations and institutions in the area for collaboration, such as self care practices and nutrition for the women and children in the house. We are presently looking for volunteers to help out with landscaping. Currently, the Guest House is at capacity, but if you're a woman or family in need, please visit the Muslim Women's Association of Pittsburgh's website.
