With tears in his eyes, Drake Troutman shook his head while he was standing in victory lane. The moment was washing over the 19-year-old native of Hyndman in Bedford County. He was a Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Dirt Series winner. Troutman took the lead for good on lap 9 and held on to secure one of the two Twin 25 features of the Friday preliminary of the Firecracker 100 weekend at Lernerville Speedway in Buffalo Township. Dresden, Ohio’s Devin Moran won the Group B feature. "I really don’t know what to say,” Troutman said in victory lane, while wiping away tears. "I didn’t think we would win one of these for a while. I just have a bunch of kids working with me, going up and down the road together.” Troutman, who is running for rookie of the year on the Lucas tour, secured his first win by holding off two-time Firecracker champ Tim McCreadie on a late race restart of the Group A feature. McCreadie drove to his inside on the restart, but Troutman ripped around the top and pulled away. It was a popular win among the crowd and among the race teams. Crew members from many of the teams lined up to congratulate him before he went into victory lane. Ross Robinson got by McCreadie for second on the final lap. Garrett Alberson finished fourth and Gregg Satterlee was fifth. Troutman dedicated the win to his late father, D.J., who died of covid in 2021. "He was the rock of this deal and without him we wouldn’t be here right now,” Troutman said. "This one is definitely for him.” Sarver native and Lernerville points leader Michael Norris looked to join in the feel-good moment, earning the pole for the Group B feature, but his night ended in heartbreak. Norris, who was looking for his first Lucas win, led the first five laps, but jumped the cushion in turn one and yielded the lead to Moran. A lap later Norris slid off turn one and brought out the caution. He ended up finishing 16th. Moran led the rest of the way, while Johnathan Davenport, Hudson O’Neal, Mike Marlar and Ricky Thornton Jr. jockeyed for position behind him. Marlar ended up second, Thornton was third, O’Neal fourth and Davenport finished fifth. Kenny Schaltenbrand led the local contingent, finishing seventh. It was the first Lernerville win for Moran. "It’s awesome to finally get a win here,” Moran said. "It’s such a historic track and they always do a great job on the racetrack.” There were 49 super late models, four less than Thursday. Troutman was fastest in Group A. Norris topped Group B and was fastest overall at 15.524. Troutman, Zeigler, Ross Robinson, Norris, Moran and Hudson O’Neal won heat races. Ryan Montgomery of Fairmont, W.Va., won the Rush crate late model series dash and will start on the pole of Saturday’s $20,000-to-win Bill Emig Memorial.
